The DEA’s pain pill database
Project management and editing
I led a cross-departmental team in building this one-of-a-kind page very quickly. This involved working with editors, reporters, engineers, graphics reporters and designers to create an interface that allowed other journalists to download charts and data about pain pill distribution in their communities. See the project here.
The Afghanistan papers
Project management and editing
I edited and led the team building the documents database for this series. In this role, I facilitated brainstorms, defined goals and philosophies, provided feedback, wrote text, and set benchmarks and timelines. The result was a user-friendly database and seamlessly integrated story text and original source material. See the database here.
The four days in 1968 that reshaped D.C.
Content creation, project management, design
For this project, myself and two graphics reporters were tasked with creating a visual overview of the 1968 riots in D.C. To do this, I played a key role in determining the structure of the piece: selecting archival photos and videos, writing and editing text and providing feedback and edits on video interviews and data animations so they fit into the flow of the piece. See the project here.
What unites us
Design and development, editing assistance, project management
This project sought to discover what Americans have in common in a time of great division. To do this, we used photos, audio and text to answer the question "What unites us?". Over a 6-month period I worked with word and photo editors to set benchmarks and to organize and edit 306 assets. I did this while designing and developing the interactive experience. See the project here.
Where killings go unsolved
Art direction and design
For this data-driven project, I worked closely with several departments to seamlessly integrate photos, videos and graphics into the text. We humanized the story by plotting victims names on a drone photo and taught readers about the data in a way that didn't interrupt the flow of the text. See the project here.
100 days of @realDonaldTrump
Design and development, content creation
To mark Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, I collected and verified every tweet the President sent during that time and created a searchable visualization of his prolific Twitter use. I designed and developed the piece while working with our politics team to analyze the tweets and provide context to the piece. See the project here. I also created the print presentation, which had a huge impact.
The drug industry’s triumph over the DEA
Art direction and design
This story was a critical investigation into the drug industry, Congress and the opioid crisis. It had a huge impact. I developed a visual identity for the project. I created a color palette inspired by pill bottles and art directed illustrations that were based on real photos and documents, but stylized to add visual interest. See the project here.
Taming the mighty Mississippi
Design and development, editing assistance
This project was a treasure trove of (sometimes disparate) assets. I worked with editors in several departments to edit text and visuals into a cohesive, visually-driven package. I used distinctive styling -- a textured background and typography reminiscent of old river maps -- to further tie the project together. I also implemented the autoplaying audio and video functionality. See the project here.
Vacation finder
Design and development, art-direction
The goal of this project was to find a fun, interactive way to resurface some of our evergreen travel content. I worked closely with the travel editors to determine what content should be included, which questions we wanted to ask readers and how we would classify each location. I wrote and implemented most of the code for recording selections and displaying the results. I also art-directed the illustrations and animated them myself. See the project here.
Tampa Bay’s coming storm
Design and development, art direction
Animated illustrations play an integral role in this presentation. To achieve this, I collaborated closely with the animator and implemented several custom features using JavaScript and CSS. To see the project, See the project here.
Apple news
For several projects – including many discussed above – I hand-built a custom presentation for Apple News. The Post is one of the leading publishers in this space, and I am working closely with editors, developers and other designers to start and scale this initiative.

Print design
I also have a wealth of experience dealing with breaking news and enterprise projects in print. At the Post, I planned for and designed the front page on election night 2016, I designed and coordinated several special sections and I have worked on many of the Post's biggest projects for the Sunday paper. I got my start in journalism as a print designer for the Arizona Republic, where, as part of a smaller visuals team, I worked on several longterm and breaking news graphics.
